Nagycenk is a national place of remembrance. The sightseeings attract plenty of visitors every year who come here to see the historical and natural values of the village.
Nagycenk with its 1826 inhabitants is located in the Western part of Hungary, not so far from the Austrian border. Our village is situated merely 3 kilometres from Lake Fertő and 12 kilometres from Sopron. By Nagycenk meet the roads 84 (towards Lake Balaton) and 85 (to Budapest).
Do not travel any further from here since You can find plenty of interesting things to see!
The history of Nagycenk remounts to the XIII. century, however, the excavations demonstrated that this country had been inhabited before. During the centuries this region belonged under the authority of many squatter families (amongst the family Széchényi). The most familiar descendant of the family Széchenyi is István Széchenyi who is called "the Greatest Hungarian".
The SzéchenyiCastlehosts the István Széchenyi Historical Museum where the political and economic legacy of "the Greatest Hungarian" is exhibited. In the castle park you can have a look at several tree-curiosities.
In front of the main gate of the caste there is a beautiful Lime alley where you can take a walk.
The mentioned natural and architectural treasures became part of the World Heritage in 2002.
When visiting with children, you do not miss the unforgettable Museum railway operated by child railroaders. At the departing station of the railway, there is an interesting open-air railway exhibition, where children can have a look at the old steam-locomotives.
The Saint Istvan Church stands in the middle of the village on the Széchenyi Square and was built according to the plans of the architect, Miklós Ybl.
In the middle of the square in front of the church stands the Széchenyi Statue made by the famous sculptor artist, Alajos Stróbl.
Just a few metres from here, "the Greatest Hungarian" rests in peace in the Mausoleum in the cemetery.
The inhabitants in Nagycenk are working on retaining the Széchenyi-recollections and his intellectual legacy. It is highly honourable for us that since joining the EU in 2004 Nagycenk can represent Hungary in the Charter of European Rural Communities.
We kindly invite You to the cultural programs held in Nagycenk, from which I would like to highlight two. The Nagycenk Art Festival is organised on August 1-10 every year and the Nagycenk Harvest Festival takes place always at the penult weekend of September.
Three restaurants, a hotel, a pension with bed and breakfast and plenty of rooms to let by the villagers are all available for You. We kindly undertake the organisation of conferences and wine festivals, furthermore, we provide You with the possibility of riding a horse.
